Precision Liposuction at Steele Dermatology
“Lipo”= fat; “Suction”= to remove by aspiration
What could be better?
Liposuction (Lipo) is the gold standard for permanently removing fat cells from areas of the body where it is unwanted. Most of us try to our best to eat well, exercise and stay in great health, but it’s not always possible to achieve the body we want with diet and exercise alone. That’s where Dr. Steele comes in. She understands that sometimes have stubborn pockets of fat that just don’t respond to our efforts in the gym and kitchen. She knows that sometimes we have a genetic predisposition to fat in one area that doesn’t fit with the rest of our body. She understands that as we get older, what was once easy to lose becomes more and more difficult to exercise away. In either case, Dr. Steele knows how you feel. See our FAQ’s below for frequently asked questions on body shaping and sculpting.
With Precision Liposuction in Johns Creek and Alpharetta, Dr. Steele can specifically target the areas of fat that are unwanted or out of the desired proportion with the rest of your body. You may love your thighs, but feel like you have a pudgy belly. You may have a great waistline, but fat thighs. Or you may hate the way that your back fat bulges around your bra or looks in t-shirts. Dr. Steele can precisely target these areas to help you achieve a more proportionate and sculpted body.
Unlike other types of liposuction, in Precision Lipo, Dr. Steele uses fine movements and tools to finely sculpt the areas to your desired result. There is are no brutish movements with large instruments like you may find in other types of liposuction that lead to post operative pain and dramatically increase risk of injury and irregular results. Instead, Dr. Steele uses microcannulas to efficiently, comfortably, safely and precisely remove fat. Patients are usually able to return to work or other activities the very next day and often describe the procedure as one of the easiest things they’ve ever done!
Dr. Steele’s Precision Lipo is based on the techniques that she learned from Dr. Jeffrey Klein, the dermatologist with pioneered the field of tumescent liposuction. Dr. Steele trained under Dr. Klein in order to learn the safest and most effective techniques and has since perfected her own Precision Lipo. Expertise matters.

COMMON BODY ISSUES
- + ABDOMINAL FAT, MUFFIN TOPS, POOCH AND LOVE HANDLES
The abdomen/stomach/tummy is one of the most common areas for fat reduction. It’s a rare person that wouldn’t want a smaller, flatter or more shapely waistline. Since the typical ideal for woman’s body is an hourglass figure and a tight washboard-like stomach for a man, surgical or non-surgical treatment of abdominal fat is on the wish list for most people. Everyone’s starting point and goals are unique though. Some need more fat reduction on the sides/love handles/muffin top area, some require more work in the front, some upper and/or lower abdomen. The beauty of liposuction or non-surgical body sculpting is that it is personalized to give you the best result for what you desire.
When you have skin that is stretched out on the abdomen (typically after having babies), fat removal may not be enough to cosmetically give you the look you want. In some cases, removing fat, simply makes it more obvious that there is excess skin. In many people, though, this is NOT the case. When the skin is in good shape and has not been stretched excessively, the skin will “snap back” once the fat is removed. During your evaluation by Dr. Steele, she will let you know if the skin has been stretched out too much and some skin removal would be necessary to flatten out the abdomen. In that case, you may be eligible for a mini tummy tuck where excess skin is removed alongside fat. Either way, you can get the result you desire depending on your needs.
Those with visceral fat (i.e. fat that lies close to the internal organs, rather than close to the skin) and appears as a “beer belly” or “barrel” shaped belly are not good candidates for liposuction or non-invasive fat removal because the fat is just too deep to reach. Instead, one should really focus on weight loss and their best health. This type of fat tends to be associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and poor health outcomes, so it is important to take action. Also, if you have a hernia, it will need to be repaired prior to any body sculpting procedure.
- + BRA FAT/BACK FAT
Bra fat tends to be really frustrating for women because it can affect one’s daily appearance in clothing. Even women of totally normal weight or even slender women can have pockets of fat on the back that make you shy away from clothing that exposes or is tightly fitting in that areas. Typically, we think of bra fat on the back, but the other area that may bother women is the bulge of fat between the upper arm and chest that may protrude around the bra or a strapless top or dress.
The fat from these areas on the back or upper chest can be removed on their own, or in conjunction with other pockets of fat from the abdomen or other areas. Removing these fat pockets from these relatively small areas can make huge difference in the way you feel about your body and the confidence you have in or out of clothing.
- + SMALL OR LARGE BUTTOCKS AND BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT
A perfect butt is rare! Due to different beauty ideals, some prefer to have smaller buttocks and some larger. Either can be achieved with liposuction or liposuction with fat transfer. If you ask any two given people what their idea of the ideal butt, they would likely have different answers.
Depending on what you want, we can help you get there! It is best, though, to take a look at your own butt and think of what you would like to be different, i.e. a little more volume up here, less on the sides/hips, more outward projection there, etc. Removing fat from the buttocks is not done in a general manner, it must be done to achieve the best resulting shape, not just decrease volume.
Similarly, if you’d like more volume, then it should be placed in the way that gives you the best shape. Buttock augmentation is achieved with fat transfer, i.e. moving fat from an area where you’d like less and moving it into the buttocks. This is a safe and effective way to augment the butt using a filler made from your own body.
There are simply no other materials approved for augmentation of the buttocks, other than your own fat. Non-invasive fat reduction has not yet been able to address the buttock area, so this is an area where liposuction is still the procedure of choice!
- + CHIN/JAWLINE FAT OR FULLNESS
Chin fat or fat along the jawline can make someone look heavier than they otherwise may be. It gives the appearance of a fat face, and therefore may also give the impression of a fat body. A beautiful face generally includes a well-defined jawline and appearance of a long neck. A fuller chin disrupts this and can really distract from an otherwise attractive face. Removing the fat from this area with liposuction is one of the most gratifying for patients because they see results quickly and the procedure makes a big impact in one’s appearance, looking slimmer and younger!
- + FAT ARMS AND THIGHS
Arms and legs that are too fat may make you avoid wearing sleeveless shirts, or not like the way you look in jeans. When one isn’t otherwise heavy, this is definitely an area that tends to be due to genetics. These are both areas that people tend to notice daily when putting on certain clothes or worse yet, avoiding certain clothes because of these areas. Liposuction is still the best option for fat reduction in these areas since there is so much precision required. After removing excess fat from these areas you may feel confident to wear clothing that you previously wouldn’t even consider!

FAQs About Liposuction
- + Why Precision Lipo vs. Any Other Type of Lipo?
Dr. Steele uses very small cannulas, microcannulas, to suction the fat in Precision Lipo. This technique has multiple advantages over that of lipo procedures that typically use large size cannulas: the small microcannulas cause minimal trauma to the tissues, ensure that you are completely comfortable both during and after the procedure. Similarly, this technique avoids unnecessary heat from lasers or ultrasound that can damage the skin and make recovery more difficult. Most patients resume normal activities the day after the procedure and require no pain medication.
With tumescent anesthesia in Precision Lipo, the numbing solution is injected into the fat layer itself and the procedure is safely done in the office so you don’t have to undergo the risk of going “under” or being “put to sleep” with general anesthesia. With tumescent anesthesia, risks of a reaction to anesthesia, puncture of vital organ or other tissues are completely avoided making Precision Lipo the safest and most effective means of liposuction.
Finally, the small microcannulas used in Precision Lipo make it precise! Using small cannulas allows Dr. Steele to finely sculpt the areas to be treated to make sure that your results are smooth and natural looking! When undergoing a cosmetic procedure you want to make sure you get the best cosmetic result possible which Dr. Steele does with Precision Lipo.
- + Will the fat cells move to other areas?
No. The fat cells that are removed are permanently gone. Your remaining fat cells in your body, however, can expand if you gain weight. If you have liposuction to your abdomen, then you have fewer fat cells in your abdomen after the procedure. Consequently, in the future, if you gain weight, you won’t have as many fat cells in the abdomen to expand, but you still have the same number of fat cells in the thighs, so the thighs get bigger. It’s not that the thighs wouldn’t have gotten bigger before the abdomen liposuction, but after the Precision Liposuction, the abdomen doesn’t get bigger leaving only the thighs for you to notice.
- + What’s the recovery like?
Immediately after Precision Lipo you will just be tired and likely want to go to rest, which is what Dr. Steele encourages. We want you to take it easy the day of the procedure and the day after, although you are free to move around and do normal daily activities the next day. You can return to work as soon as you are ready, usually in 1-2 days.
During the procedure anesthetic solution is infused into the fat layer under the skin, and while some of it is suctioned out, the remainder will drain in the first 24-36hrs post Precision Lipo. You will be given garments and pads to absorb this solution.
Dr. Steele’s biggest concern is your positioning. Once she suctions out the fat cells then you will be in a tight-fitting garment that will shape your body and keep the contours that were just created. Standing or lying in a straight up and down, or side to side position are the best way to keep the shape stable. So avoid folding your body over in sitting, standing or other activities. If you have fat transfer to the buttocks then you will have to be very careful about sitting on the area and must avoiding crushing the newly transferred fat cells.
- + How soon will I see results?
Mostly, you will see the results immediately. You will have some swelling and leftover numbing solution in the area though right after the procedure that will need to resolve before you see your final results. As far as fat reduction and shaping go, you will see about 90% of your result by 6 weeks. Skin tightening as result of the procedure though may continue for 6 months though. So, if we do consider something like a mini tummy tuck or excision of any excess skin, we wait that period of time to see how much total tightening is achieved in the 6 month period.
- + How much weight or how many dress sizes will I lose?
You will lose a minimal amount of weight. Fat just doesn’t weight that much, so even taking away a few liters of fat, may only mean a pound or two in “weight loss”. The point is not weight loss, but shaping. On the other hand, you may go down a size or two. It will mostly be about looking better in your clothes and not having bulges or overhanging fat in certain areas.
- + I’m planning on losing weight. Should I lose weight before or after the liposuction?
It’s best to be closest to your ideal weight when you undergo the procedure.
1) You need to adopt healthy habits that will allow you to get to and stay at your ideal weight even after the liposuction.
2) We want to know where the isolated bulges and pockets are really located. When you have excess fat all over, it’s harder to accurately shape you.
- + What if you have flabby/stretched out skin?
You get the best results with Precision Lipo if you have good skin texture with great elastic fibers such that the skin will snap back once the fat is removed. For most patients, the skin is capable of a significant amount of retraction. Dr. Steele almost always likes to see how much your skin can retract naturally before doing other procedures. If the skin doesn’t retract well then you may be a candidate for a mini tummy tuck where the excess skin is removed or a skin tightening procedure like Ultherapy.
- + Is it possible to transfer the fat somewhere else?
Yes! If you have an area of the body where you want more volume (typically the face or buttocks) then more care can be taken in extracting the fat to keep them whole and healthy and they can be injected into other areas of the body. For the face, where injectable fillers are a great option, there are pros and cons to volumizing with a filler vs. fat which Dr. Steele can discuss with you. For an area like the buttocks, fat is the only injectable option.
- + Are there age limits or health restrictions for getting liposuction?
There are no age limits. If your skin is in good condition and you are in good health, then most likely you are a good candidate for Precision Liposuction! Overall, Dr. Steele wants her patients to be in good health before undergoing liposuction, i.e. good blood pressure, good blood sugar, etc. Dr. Steele will go over your medical history, medications and order some labs to confirm that Precision Liposuction is a safe, healthy procedure for you. She will address any specific health concerns with you as well.
