- + ACNE
Today’s acne affects women and men in all stages of life. At Steele Dermatology, we see boys, girls, men and women with acne (breakouts, zits, pimples) from teenage years well into adulthood. There are no 2 patients with the same acne. Every patient has different triggers (diet, stress, hormones, bacteria, yeast, etc.), skin types (oily, sensitive, dry, etc.), and lifestyles that affect not only the condition, but also the appropriate treatments. While acne certainly isn’t life threatening, it can have a huge impact on your life and the way that you feel about your appearance—we know that acne can be frustrating and embarrassing. Dr. Steele will take your acne seriously and create a comprehensive and effective plan to finally clear your acne breakouts such that you no longer have to hide behind make-up or clothing.
Acne is often complicated by scars, blemishes, dark spots, etc. These long-lasting scars, spots and textural changes can be equally or even more distressing than the acne bumps themselves. Dr. Steele considers a treatment plan to be incomplete without treating the blemishes, dark spots and scarring. We have many options for minimizing the scars, discoloration and blemishes that can be left over by acne. Some options include chemical peels (which will help even skin tone and remove excess pigment deposited as an acne bump heals), lasers (which help remove pigment and even skin texture with resurfacing), and creams (which can help keep skin tone even). It is of the utmost importance to us at Steele Dermatology that our treatments are both safe and effective for your skin type and color. You can be confident that we will only offer treatments that are safe for you.

- + AGING SKIN
From the day we come into this world our skin is aging. The changes in our skin that occur early on are good, such as losing baby fat in the face and developing more defined facial features. However, we can often think of aging skin as “old skin” as we may start to think about the way the skin of our parents and grandparents. At Steele Dermatology, we don’t promote “anti-aging”, instead we believe in enjoying getting older without looking old. Dr. Steele believes in keeping the skin and body healthy such that you look your best at every age. By conservatively addressing the subtle signs of aging as they happen, you never see a dramatic shift where you look up and think that you suddenly look old and so different than your younger self.

Overall, you need to take precautions to care for your skin at every age and invest in your skin’s future (blog post) such that the aging process doesn’t take a toll on your skin. - + ROSACEA
The full name of rosacea is acne rosacea. It is an adult form of acne that usually doesn’t start to affect people until their 20s, or more commonly, in their 30s, 40s and 50s. Those who have rosacea may or may not have ever had the more typical type of acne (acne vulgaris). Although we often think of rosacea in very fair skinned people, it can affect people of all skin types. Rosacea consists of different signs and symptoms that may affect patients to varying degrees. Since Rosacea is always front and center on the face and can be quite dramatic in appearance, we know how much it can bother you and can make you self-conscious about your appearance. Dr. Steele will help identify your individual symptoms of rosacea and create a treatment plan that is most appropriate.
Rosacea can really vary from mild to severe based on the your specific symptoms.
Treatments for rosacea are patient-specific given and may include topical creams, oral medications/pills, laser treatment and camouflaging makeup. It is often a combination of treatments that works best, while a prescription cream may be good for minimizing pimples, you may require a laser to treat redness and broken blood vessels. At Steele Dermatology, you can be confident that we will find the combination of skin care therapies that works best for you.
- + RASHES
“Rash” is a very general term that refers to any sort of skin outbreak that isn’t otherwise specified, but includes allergic rashes, poison ivy, medication reactions, and rare skin conditions, etc. It is best to seek care from a dermatologist specifically, if possible, concerning any outbreak on the skin. Dr. Steele is an expert in the treatment of skin, so she has experience with rashes from the common to even the most rare and knows how to treat them quickly and safely.
If there is any question what the exact diagnosis may be, a biopsy could be required which is usually done at the time of your visit. It allows a more thorough examination by a pathologist that can often make a better diagnosis by looking at a sample of your skin under the microscope.
Even if a skin biopsy is required, Dr. Steele can skillfully, effectively and quickly treat the rash to make you feel more comfortable (especially if it is itchy or tender) and also, to heal any unsightly areas on the skin. Dr. Steele will educate you on the cause of your rash, what can be done to avoid outbreaks, and develop a long-term treatment plan, if necessary.
- + ECZEMA & PSORIASIS
Eczema and psoriasis are both chronic inflammatory diseases of the skin that affect millions of people. At Steele Dermatology we understand how these skin conditions can make you feel itchy and uncomfortable, but also, can be embarrassing when others can see the signs of your skin disease. The good news is that Dr. Steele can keep your skin disease well controlled such that your skin remains clear with appropriate medications.
See Dr. Steele’s discussion of the important points about psoriasis.
- + DISCOLORATION, MELASMA, BLEMISHES & SUN SPOTS
Skin discoloration, including melasma, sun spots, and blemishes, are some of the most common complaints that Dr. Steele sees, especially in both women and men for whom the splotchy brown areas on the face can be frustrating and upsetting. All of these conditions disrupt the appearance of smooth and even skin tone, which can make you look older and your skin more weathered.
Dr. Steele is skilled with all of the treatment options for tackling discoloration and uneven skin tone. Lasers, chemical peels, and medical grade skin creams work well for the patients at Steele Dermatology, often working in combination to give a more even, youthful and radiant skin tone.
- + MOLES & MELANOMA
Moles are seen on every skin type and almost everyone has at least a few moles, but some have hundreds. The biggest concern for a mole is that it is cancerous (melanoma) or pre-cancerous (dysplastic or atypical). For this reason, Dr. Steele recommends all adults getting a skin exam at least once yearly. Dr. Steele is very thorough in her skin/mole exams to make sure that she sees everything that you may not and addresses any and everything that is new, concerning or about which you have questions.
Dr. Steele takes steps to make sure that you get the most complete exam and follow up possible. When one has many, many moles, we may take pictures of your moles so that we can use the pictures as a reference for future visits to monitor for changes. Also, Dr. Steele uses a dermatoscope, a specialized tool, to be able to examine moles for features that may suggest that it is atypical of even skin cancer. These steps distinguish Dr. Steele in her thoroughness in evaluating your skin and your moles.
If you have risk factors for skin cancer (family or personal history of skin cancer, sun exposure, or fair skin type) then make an appointment with Dr. Steele to ensure the health of your skin today.
- + PREGNANCY RELATED SKIN ISSUES
Pregnancy is a highly unique physiologic condition when everything is different! Most women who have been pregnant can attest to this. Due to the changes in the blood system, immunity, hormones, etc. the skin can develop unique characteristics. We know that sometimes you don’t know what’s normal and what’s not and you don’t know what it is you can and cannot use on the skin during pregnancy that would be safe for the baby. Dr. Steele knows that your baby is your priority, so she will evaluate the skin and any skin problems you may have and guide you to the best skin care during this special time.
What’s normal? A degree of increased flushing/blushing is normal considering an increased blood supply during pregnancy. Also, because of this increase in blood and fluid, you may also develop swelling in the legs and an increase in varicose veins. Compression hose may be helpful in minimizing swelling and preventing varicose veins. Dr. Steele often sees changes in acne—sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. While acne treatments are more limited during pregnancy, Dr. Steele discusses the options with patients that will include a variety of pregnancy-safe products, medicines, and procedures.
It is also normal for things to grow on the skin. Patients often report new skin tags or benign skin growths that they notice during pregnancy. These are generally no problem and can be treated at one’s leisure. Moles may even grow during pregnancy with the body, which means that if your skin stretches your moles may stretch proportionately. However, your moles should not change shape or color or grow rapidly during pregnancy. You should keep surveillance on your skin during pregnancy in the same way you would at any other time because it is very possible to develop a melanoma during pregnancy.
Especially during pregnancy, better safe than sorry. It is advisable to get your skin checked out when you notice something is awry. Once the baby comes you’ll be even busier, so get things checked out that are concerning to you or your Obstetrician when you notice them. If treatment can be or is better deferred until a later time, then Dr. Steele will make that choice with you but getting evaluated for skin related changes shouldn’t wait
- + SKIN CANCER & PRE-CANCERS
Skin cancer is one of the most serious of all skin conditions that should be diagnosed and treated by a well trained Board Certified Dermatologist like Dr. Steele. There are actually many types of skin cancer that Dr. Steele is familiar with diagnosing and treating, but the most common types are Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) and Melanoma. Additionally, pre-cancerous actinic keratoses are common and should be treated.
At Steele Dermatology we will thoroughly examine your skin to make sure that there are not any lesions that are suspicious for skin cancer with advanced diagnostic tools. If you are diagnosed with skin cancer, you will be advised of the most up to date treatment options and your skin cancer will be handled quickly to ensure your skin is cancer free.
If you have risk factors for skin cancer (family or personal history of skin cancer, sun exposure, or fair skin type) then make an appointment with Dr. Steele to ensure the health of your skin today.
- + SCARS & KELOIDS
Everyone has scars, unfortunately. We have them from accidents, cuts and scrapes, surgeries, burns, etc. There are good scars, which are nearly invisible (ones that are perfectly flat, minimal in size, and close to your normal skin color and texture) and bad scars (ones that are raised or sunken, darker, lighter or more red-pink than your skin color, or stretched open wide). Keloids are especially bad scars that tend to be very thick, puffy and larger than the original wound. Dr. Steele understands that scars can often draw unwanted attention and detract from one’s appearance. At Steele Dermatology, we have developed unique treatment options to dramatically improve the look of your scars, with the goal to make them practically invisible. Visit our Scar Treatment Center for more information about techniques for treating your scars.
Dr. Steele has been successful in treating some of the most challenging scars, i.e. those that have been previously treated without success, on areas of the body with lots of tension, or that have come back after previous treatment. No scar is too difficult—it can always be better, and usually it can be awesome! Making scars go away can require some persistence and patience, however patients are pleased with the end results that they otherwise would have been unable to achieve. Given the specific characteristics of your scar and your history, we will develop a comprehensive plan to make sure your scar is managed with the most advanced treatment options that just aren’t available with all doctors. Dr. Steele operates with the goal of making people notice you, not your scar with long-term results and happy patients.
- + VOLUME LOSS & PARENTHESES LINES
When certain marketing companies started to advertise about filling (or getting rid of) the parentheses lines), they were on to something. As we age, we don’t just develop fine lines and wrinkles, but also, deep folds and grooves that change the shape of our face and create a tired, sagging and aged appearance. Over time the soft tissue layers of our face tend to deteriorate such that a once full, healthy, smooth textured face (or other area of the body) becomes deflated and sags and hangs in ways that make us appear tired and older. These changes happen subtly and slowly such that you may not even notice them if you’re not paying attention, until one day all the small changes add up and you feel like you all of a sudden look old and different. Dr. Steele’s approach is that since the changes happen gradually and subtly, they are best addressed in the same manner with small, subtle corrections over time. The healthy re-volumization of the face can make one of the biggest improvements in your overall radiance and healthy appearance.
Yes, you will continue to age and therefore, you’ll need to keep up with treatment, but maintenance generally needs to be done infrequently and small procedures/small amounts of product are required. It is the most natural and satisfying approach to skin rejuvenation.
Dr. Steele is experienced with all of the major injectable products used for volumization and can recommend the best options for you to make you look your best!
- + TIRED APPEARANCE & WRINKLING
Oftentimes, patients feel like they just look “tired” or “worn-out” and they can’t exactly pinpoint why. Is it wrinkles? Is it volume loss? Discoloration or uneven coloration? Lax skin, bags, etc.? Dr. Steele understands this and can help you understand the factors that are contributing to that look. Improving those factors that make you look older, more tired, etc. will make you look and feel refreshed and more confident about your image to the world.
At Steele Dermatology, we know that it can seem like a “big step” to start to consider cosmetic procedures, including botox and other injectables. It can seem like you’ve crossed over into a different stage or phase of life, and you can feel like you want to make sure that you do things that make you look like yourself, but your best self and look natural. Dr. Steele takes all of that into consideration and recommends that you start earlier than later. Everything is done better when you address it early. If you start early, you can take more conservative steps along the way to continue to look good as you age rather than waiting until the signs of aging are evident.
We understand what you want—nothing drastic, nothing crazy, just looking your best. Dr. Steele will create a treatment plan for you that naturally and safely makes you look your best. A treatment plan may involve the use of fillers to volumize the face (see volume loss), toxins to improve the appearance of wrinkles (see wrinkle paragraph), lasers to improve collagen and texture, lasers, peels or chemical peels to improve discoloration (see Sun Freckles), and a skin care product regimen to ensure that your results will last and you will get the best out of your treatments.
Dr. Steele believes that you feel good when you look good and you look good when you feel good, so all of our treatments are designed to allow you to look and feel your very best with the most natural looking improvements.
- + PEDIATRIC DERMATOLOGY
Dr. Steele sees children routinely and treats everything from acne, to warts, birthmarks etc. Children take a little extra care in that they can be shy about the doctor altogether, even though they usually aren’t getting shots or other treatments that they may consider traumatic at the dermatologist.
When it comes to mole exams, Dr. Steele recommends parents bring in their children for skin evaluations when they start to get moles, this is typical around 10 for most kids and sometimes earlier for children that may develop more moles over time and with a family history of melanoma or atypical moles.
Otherwise, kids tend to get tinea capitis (ringworm on the scalp), staph infections, warts, and molluscum because they are due to infection of some sort. Children are still developing their immunity so they are prone to many superficial skin infections that should be treated. They also tend to pass infections back and forth with other kids at school, during sports or with siblings or family members.
Of course, eczema tends to affect kids and can be managed with a good skincare regimen recommended by Dr. Steele. They generally grow out of it over time, as they do with many other pediatric conditions.
While kids usually present with the same few conditions, there are also some rare rashes and lesions that occur in children. Dr. Steele has expert experience in diagnosis and treatment of even the most rare pediatric conditions.
- + LASER RESURFACING
Laser resurfacing is a procedure that can be used to correct or improve various issues with the skin, both deep and superficial. Laser resurfacing has always been an excellent treatment for aging, damaged or scarred skin, however, laser resurfacing used to require significant downtime (recovery time when you may look unpresentable in public). Newer resurfacing options give you the significant results you want without the downtime.
- + CHEMICAL PEELS
Chemical peels are treatments that are done in the office, where a chemical is applied to the skin that is designed to dissolve the superficial layers of skin that have been exposed to the surface for some time. Superficial skin cells that have excess pigment and rough texture peel off after a few days, and a fresh skin layer is revealed. There are various strengths and types of peels available, which give different results. Depending on the depth of the peel and the degree of skin damage that you have, you may need more than one chemical peel to get your desired level of improvement.
- + ULTHERAPY
- + BOTOX & FILLERS
Dr. Steele is an expert in the popular field of injectables for skin rejuvenation and volumization. When it comes to choosing a provider in this field, there are many choices so choose an expert. As a dermatologist, Dr. Steele is a specialist in the skin and all of it’s layers and has years of experience with injectables as a top injector in the area. She will make sure that get excellent results and avoid complications and bruising. Dr. Steele understands that patients do not like pain so she takes every effort to make her procedures as comfortable as possible for you, using numbing and a gentle touch. Results also matter so you can be certain to get the results that will leave you feeling confident and satisfied.
- + SKIN CANCER SURGERY
When you have had a biopsy and the result is a skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), or Melanoma (connect to descriptions otherwise discussed). Dr. Steele will discuss the treatment options with you. If the lesion is invasive (not superficial) then surgery is usually the only legitimate option to make sure that all traces of the lesion are removed. A skin cancer surgery (or that for an atypical/dysplastic mole) is not very much different than a biopsy in preparation, however, you do usually have stitches at the conclusion of the procedure. The lesion is first identified, cleaned and numbed then the lesion is excised with a “safety” margin around the area to make sure the whole lesion is removed. You will have deep stitches that dissolve and some on top which may or may not dissolve depending on the location and your lifestyle. You will be given detailed wound care instructions and asked to follow up to make sure your site is healing well. Your lesion will be sent back to the lab to make sure there is no trace of the original lesion remaining. In some cases, your skin cancer would be better treated by a specialist that performs Mohs surgery. This is usually for skin cancers on the face or scalp, particularly large or aggressive lesions, or those that have been previously treated and recurred.
In any case, Dr. Steele will choose, with you, the most appropriate treatment regimen. In some superficial cancers, this may even include a topical chemotherapy type of cream which spares patients a procedure and usually leads to an excellent cosmetic result.
- + MOLE REMOVAL/SKIN LESION BIOPSY
When Dr. Steele identifies a mole that is suspicious for skin cancer (melanoma) or appears to be at least atypical, she will biopsy the lesion. A biopsy consists of taking a portion of the lesion (or all of the lesion that is visible to the eye) to send to the lab/pathologist for further evaluation and diagnosis. The type and size of the biopsy depends on the type of lesion and what the pathologist requires for diagnosis. Dr. Steele may also do biopsies to diagnose a rash or gather more information in diagnosing hair loss/alopecia.Biopsies begin with identifying and cleaning the area, as well as taking a photo for documentation, and then numbing the spot with local anesthetic. Once numbed, a sample of the skin is removed, taking as minimal tissue possible to reduce potential for scarring; although diagnosis is the priority, so a sufficient amount of tissue is taken to ensure that the procedure is useful.Biopsy sites are bandaged and detailed wound care instructions are given to the patient so that you know what to expect and how to best take care of your wound. Results are delivered as soon as they are received then a plan of action is discussed based on the biopsy results.
- + COSMETIC MOLE REMOVAL
Sometimes moles are not concerning as far as atypia or skin cancer goes, but just does not look good. This is subjective, and only you can determine how you feel about a mole’s appearance. Some feel that their visible moles are their beauty marks or one of their signatures, which is great. Dr. Steele will evaluate such lesions to make sure that they are appear benign and then follow up with routine skin checks. For others, some moles can be undesirable because of their location, i.e. getting snagged or caught on clothing, combs, brushes, etc., or draw attention on the face or other visible body part. Dr. Steele is sensitive to the way you may feel about certain moles and can help guide you in the decision whether to remove it or not and the best way to do so.A cosmetic mole removal consists of cleaning and numbing the area with a small numbing shot that may sting briefly. Once the area is numbed adequately, the mole is gently removed with small blade such that the spot is flat with the rest of the surrounding skin. Dr. Steele then blends the edges of the area where the mole formally existed. The scrape-like wound is covered with a minimal dressing and you are given detailed instructions on how to care for the wound to make sure it heals as beautifully as possible. All moles are sent to the lab for evaluation. Since skin health is always Dr. Steele’s ultimate priority, we always have a mole checked at the lab to ensure that it was benign. It gives both Dr. Steele and the patient peace of mind to know that there were no atypical or cancerous cells in the lesion. Dr. Steele always sees patients in follow up to ensure that the area is healing well. In cosmetic mole removals, the goal is to improve the appearance so Dr. Steele makes sure that that is the end result is cosmetically elegant.
- + EARLOBE REPAIR
When your earring hole goes long…you can get a split earlobe or slit-like hole in the earlobe from the weight of earrings or from trauma, like an earring getting snagged or pulled. Sometimes it is split all the way through such that the hole cannot be used at all. Otherwise, it can just be a long slit that can still hold an earring, although it doesn’t usually hold an earring in place well and small earrings can even slip through big slits.Dr. Steele can easily surgically repair the earlobe such that it can be re-pierced 6 weeks later. She will clean and numb the ear with local anesthetic and surgically cut fresh edges of skin on each side of the slit, then re-approximate the skin and close with stitches. You will be unable to wear earrings for the 6 weeks while it takes the closure to heal. You may have one or both earlobes done at the same time. This is a very satisfying procedure for patients, being able to wear earrings once again!
- + DPN REMOVAL
DPN (Dermatosis Nigra Papulosa) Removal
DPNs are small brown moles that usually appear on the face, neck, and chest of African American, Asian or Latino patients. They usually start in one’s 20s or 30s and continue to grow more numerous with time. The biggest reason that they occur is genetics, with most patients noting that their relatives have the same “moles”. They are harmless, but can absolutely be removed safely, painlessly, and completely. Although it is possible to remove a few at a time, Dr. Steele always recommends getting all of the lesions removed at once to get the best results. On the day of the procedure, a numbing cream will be applied to the face (or other area to be treated). Once allowed to take effect, Dr. Steele will remove the small lesions, either with scissors (small excisions) or an electrocautery device that burns the lesions. The method of removal depends on the individual lesions (if they have a stalk at the base and hang at all), if they are flat and broad or flat and small. Dr. Steele chooses the method that will be least traumatic to the skin. Healing will take about a week altogether, however, most people feel comfortable going to work and doing routine errands and activities during the healing process.Dr. Steele always sees patients back for a follow up to make sure there are no remaining lesions that require treatment and also, that the skin is healing well and with no signs of the previous lesions or the procedure!
