Renew your skin from within.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that supports the skin’s natural renewal process to improve tone, texture, and overall radiance. By creating precise microchannels in the skin, the treatment stimulates collagen and elastin production and can help soften acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, and areas of uneven texture. At Steele Dermatology, Dr. Johnson personalizes each treatment based on your skin, concerns, and goals for gradual, natural-looking improvement.

Microneedling FAQs

Your skin is numbed with a topical numbing solution for at least 30 minutes. Once the numbing cream is removed, we apply a hyaluronic acid serum and start the microneedling. You will be numb, so you won’t feel pain at this point. The microneedling pen moves rapidly, going 0.5mm and 2.5mm into the skin to create repeated injury in a consistent and patterned manner. (This is a necessary step to know that we have gotten deep enough into the skin to create the changes we want in the skin.)

The micro injuries kick the skin into healing mode with the production of growth factors, new skin cells, and new collagen. The needling also creates tiny channels in the skin into which we can infuse skincare products to increase their penetration and efficacy. The needling will create pinpoint bleeding all over the face.

Once the microneedling is complete, we choose a therapeutic cream or solution to apply that will address your specific skin concerns, such as texture or discoloration. Products are massaged into your skin so that by the time you leave, your skin only looks a little flushed. You will go home with post-care instructions and products to use over the next three days.

Microneedling may improve:

  • Fine lines
  • Acne scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Mild discoloration

It can be performed on the face and on selected areas of the body, depending on the concern being treated.

For the day of treatment, you will look flushed and red. It takes about an hour or so for the channels to close post-treatment, so we like for you to avoid washing your face or makeup for at least that period of time. The next day you will likely only be a little pink and can apply makeup, as usual. If your treatment included a product to make you peel off sun spots or dark spots, you may be peeling for a couple of days. We tailor the treatment to your lifestyle and your skin condition though, so we discuss post-treatment appearance with you before selecting a regimen.

For corrective treatment of texture, fine lines, pigmentary conditions, acne scars, and pores, we recommend an initial series of between five and six treatments performed one month apart. You will notice improvement after each session but will need the full series to reap all the benefits. After you’ve completed your series, then you will move to maintenance treatment, which will range from every three to six months, depending on your skin and what other treatments you get done.

The skin may begin to look smoother and more refreshed as it heals, but collagen production develops gradually. Improvements typically become more noticeable over the following weeks and may continue for several months.

Many patients benefit from a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart. The number of sessions recommended will depend on the condition of your skin, the concern being treated, and the level of improvement you hope to achieve.

Yes. Microneedling may be incorporated into a broader skin rejuvenation plan that includes chemical peels, laser treatment, facials, and carefully selected skincare products. Dr. Johnson will recommend combinations and timing based on your skin’s needs.
