Sclerotherapy

Dr. Johnson will have you lie down on the treatment table so you’re comfortable and the tiny veins are exposed. Dr. Johnson uses a small needle to inject a sclerosing solution into the targeted veins. The sclerosing solution irritates the tiny vessel and makes it collapse and disappear. The solution that Dr. Johnson uses is pH balanced so it doesn’t burn. Most patients barely notice the pricks of the needle. The treated areas are bandaged then you put on your compression stockings to help seal the vessels closed.

Sclerotherapy is most effective for:

• Spider veins (telangiectasias)
• Small reticular veins
• Certain small varicose veins

Larger varicose veins or veins caused by underlying venous disease may require additional evaluation or referral for other treatment options.

Most patients experience only mild discomfort during the injections. You may feel a brief stinging or burning sensation that typically lasts only a few seconds.

The number of treatments depends on the number and size of the veins being treated. Many patients require two to four treatment sessions to achieve their desired cosmetic improvement.

Treated spider veins often begin fading within several weeks, although some veins may take several months to fully disappear. Larger veins generally require more time to improve.

The treated veins typically do not return once they have closed. However, sclerotherapy does not prevent new spider veins from developing over time. Some patients choose maintenance treatments if additional veins appear in the future.

Mostly, recovery includes wearing compression hose (or at least socks) for one or two weeks after treatment to make sure the veins are sealed close. Otherwise, you can return to normal activities immediately after treatment. We encourage you to walk following treatment, while strenuous exercise, hot tubs, and prolonged sun exposure should be avoided for one week.

You will likely need additional treatment in the future. People develop varicose veins because of genetics, previous pregnancy, and standing on their feet for extended periods of time. So, over time you will likely create more varicose and spider veins. You may need additional treatment in one or two years, depending on the severity of the disease.

Sclerotherapy has been performed safely for many years and is considered the standard treatment for many spider veins. As with any medical procedure, temporary bruising, redness, discoloration, or swelling can occur. Dr. Johnson will review potential risks and determine whether sclerotherapy is appropriate for you.
