Microneedling is a minimally-invasive procedure that stimulates collagen production to smooth out the skin’s surface. Your skin will be punctured multiple times with tiny needles that go between 0.5mm and 2.5mm into the skin. The microneedling pen moves rapidly to create repeated injury in a consistent and patterned manner. The micro injuries themselves kick the skin into healing mode with the production of growth factors, new skin cells, and new collagen. The needling also creates tiny channels in the skin into which we can infuse skincare products to increase their penetration and efficacy. At Steele Dermatology, our microneedling treatments are typically like 2 treatments in one with the product selection and aftercare regimen we select.Â

UNDERSTANDING YOUR TREATMENT
Your skin is first numbed with a topical numbing solution all over for at least 30 minutes. Once the numbing cream is removed, we apply a hyaluronic acid serum and start the microneedling. You will be numb, so you won’t feel pain at this point. The needling will create pinpoint bleeding all over the face. Note: this is a necessary step to know that we have gotten deep enough into the skin to get the changes we want in the skin. Once the microneedling is complete we choose a therapeutic cream or solution to apply that will address your specific skin concerns: texture, discoloration, etc. Products are massaged into your skin so that it only looks a little flushed when you leave. You will go home with post-care instructions and products to use over the next 3 days.
For the day of treatment, you will look a little flushed/red. It takes about an hour or so for the channels to close post-treatment, so we like for you to avoid washing your face or makeup for at least that period of time. The next day you will likely only be a little pink and can apply makeup, as usual. If your treatment included a product to make you peel off sun spots or dark spots, you may be peeling for a couple of days. We tailor the treatment to your lifestyle and your skin condition though, so we discuss post-treatment appearance with you before selecting a regimen.Â
For corrective treatment of texture, fine lines, pigmentary conditions, acne scars, and pores, we recommend an initial series of between 5 and 6 treatments performed 1 month apart. You will notice improvement after each session but will need the full series to reap the total benefits of treatment. After you’ve completed your series, then you will move to maintenance treatment which will range from every 3-6 months depending on your skin and what other treatments you get done.
